Preface

Apple officially released iOS 17.5 today, and you can install the update by going to the System Settings app on your iPhone, then selecting General, then Software Update.

Although there are not many new features in iOS 17.5, there are some remarkable features. Let’s share the relevant new features today.

Web distribution in the European Union

In the EU, the latest iOS 17.5 update introduces the ability to install apps directly from the developer’s website. Apple launched the new “Web Distribution” feature last month and said it allows developers to distribute their iOS apps directly from their own websites.

To use this feature, developers must opt-in to the updated App Store Business Terms, which require a core technology fee of €0.50 per first annual install above 1 million in the past 12 months.

Any apps installed through the unofficial App Store are still required to comply with Apple’s notarization guidelines (Basic Review). Apps can only be installed from website domains registered by developers in App Store Connect. Apple will also provide developers with a series of APIs to integrate with system functionality.

Design updates

iOS 17.5 also comes with some small design updates, such as the Podcasts app widget now having new dynamic colors, with the background color changing based on the image of the podcast you’re currently playing.

Also in the Apple Books App, Apple has redesigned the “Reading Goals” icon in the top navigation bar.

New Pride Wallpaper

This time iOS 17.5 also provides a new Pride Collection wallpaper for iPhone and iPad users. The new live wallpapers are part of Apple’s goal to “support global movements to protect and promote equality for the LGBTQ+ community.”

This wallpaper will show an animation every time it is unlocked, which is very cool.

The corresponding watch system watchOS 10.5 also adds a new Pride watch face.

New “Repair Status”

Also in iOS 17.5, Apple has added a new “Repair Status” feature to Find Now. It can be used when your device is taken to an Apple store for repair. It does not require turning off the “Stolen Device Protection” and “Find” functions when sending it for repair. In the past, if your device was taken for maintenance, the maintenance staff would ask you to turn off the search function. With this function, you no longer need it.

Bug fixes

In addition to all the new features and changes, iOS 17.5 also comes with 15 security fixes for iPhone users. According to Apple, none of the 15 vulnerabilities have been exploited by hackers.
